STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN

FLOWERS

Living in Zone 5A, we are privileged to design with local flowers from May - October (typically), and this is not something we take for granted. Our relationship with local growers allows us to take advantage of sustainably sourced blooms whenever possible. We do recognize, however, that some of our floral favourites are not readily available through local sources, in which case we strive to purchase strategically and in a limited capacity. We also commit to:

  • Buying seasonal, local flowers and foliage whenever possible to decrease transportation and packaging pollution while supporting local farmers
  • Foraging product in an ethical and safe manner to help lower our carbon footprint
  • Abstain from the use of spray painted florals, or florals dyed with chemical tinting agents

FLORAL FOAM

For decades, floral foam has been widely used in the industry. However, research has shown that its negative environmental impact is undeniable. Although it is commonly perceived as harmless due to its green colour and capability to “dissolve” or “disappear," floral foam is made from tiny microplastic particles and chemical compounds that do not break down. Because of this, Floral Revolution abstains from using floral foam in everyday designs. Instead we use biodegradable mechanics or chicken wire that can be used repeatedly.

**In cases of severe heat or uncertain conditions, Floral Revolution may have to use floral foam in a limited capacity. If at all possible, its use in wedding design only will be limited**

PROCESSING + PACKAGING

There is no hiding it – the floral industry produces significant waste in the packaging of flowers. Plastic sleeves are often used as a way to bundle and protect flowers on their long journey to a flower shop. Upon arrival, flowers are unpacked, with undesirable leaves, stems, thorns and petals often being sent straight to the landfill. Floral Revolution is committed to the following:

  • Purchasing flowers from local farmers in order to avoid unnecessary plastic packaging (our local farmers send their flowers in loose bunches, in re-usable buckets)
  • All unavoidable plastic packaging will be re-used as packing material
  • Biodegradable floral material will be composted using local yard waste programs

REDUSE/REUSE/RECYCLE

As florists we understand that the manufacture, shipping and distribution of many of our products have detrimental and lasting ramifications for the earth (air pollution, fossil fuel waste, harsh mining processes, single use plastics etc). We are committed to reducing this environmental stress by adhering to the following:

  • thrifting/recycling vases and vessels - sourcing locally wherever possible
  • offering classic wedding/event rentals to re-use items year after year
  • recycling of all plastic and paper waste
  • use of product packaging that is recyclable and compostable
  • refrain from single-use plastics like cardettes, balloons, plastic bags
